South Central Farm

The South Central Farm, also known as the South Central Community Garden, was an urban farm and community garden located in an industrial area of South Los Angeles, California which was in operation between 1994 and 2006. At 14 acres, it was considered one of the largest urban farms in the United States. The farm was sold in 2004, and the farmers were evicted in 2006.wiki

On July 5, 2006, workers began bulldozing the farm amidst protest and acts of civil disobedience. The farmers disputed the validity of the sale in court and staged vigils in protest. The farm is the subject of the 2008 Academy Award-nominated documentary film, The Garden.

As of May 2014 the land remains an empty lot.

"Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, The Garden is an engaging and powerful look at the famous political and social battle over the largest community garden in the US (located in South Central Los Angeles). The film shows how the politics of power and greed (backroom deals, land developing, green politics, money) tragically intersect with working class families who rely on this communal garden for their livelihood.

The film exposes the fault lines in American society and raises crucial and challenging questions about liberty, equality, and justice for the poorest and most vulnerable among us."
